Gulf Shores honor receives another honor

GULF SHORES, Ala. — Gulf Shores Patrolman Chris Bagby was presented with an Honor Medal from the Mobile and Baldwin County chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution for rescuing a man from a burning car last year.

According to Mack Matthews, vice president of the local Gen. Galvez chapter, the medal is awarded “once in a lifetime.”

“Our organization’s goals include promotion of patriotism, good citizenship, honesty and respect for our freedom which was earned by our forefathers,” Matthews said.

On Aug. 13, Bagby saw an E-320 Mercedes overturned on and ablaze on Fort Morgan Road before pulling the 48-year-old driver, Orange Beach resident Ronnie Phillips, from the car. The persistent patrolman carried Phillips over his shoulder across the road before the gas tank exploded.

Bagby had to be restrained by other officers while attempting to rescue the passenger, 22-year-old Tiffany Walencik of Foley, before the car was consumed with flames.

Walencik died in the accident; Phillips passed away two days later in the hospital from the burns.

The Sons of the American Revolution Honor Medal is one of the highest national awards the organization can offer, Matthews said.

“It is with distinct pleasure I award you (Chris Bagby) this medal from the Sons of the American Revolution,” Matthews said, before pinning the medal on Bagby’s uniform. “You’re quick response to the accident and risking your own life to save another is something worthy of note and we take great pride in honoring you with this medal.”

Bagby has also been presented with the Gulf Shores Police Department’s Medal of Valor and recognized by the Perdido Bay Optimists Club as “Officer of the Year” in Baldwin County.

Bagby was also presented with the Medal of Honor, the highest award for law enforcement from the Alabama State Legislature.

“Special thanks to the Gen. Galvez chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution for doing that for our fine officer,” Mayor Robert Craft said.
