FAIRHOPE, Alabama — The Gulf Shores Lady Dolphins finished with a 2-1 record in this weekend's Southern Shootout soccer tournament in Fairhope.
Gulf Shores (3-1) defeated Stanhope Elmore 2-1 and Carroll-Ozark 3-0 on Friday before a 1-0 loss to Sylacauga on Saturday morning at the Barnwell Fields. The Lady Dolphins played most of Saturday's loss without Auburn signee Sophie Simantel, who was nursing soreness after Friday's games.
"Overall I think we had a fantastic tournament," Gulf Shores head coach Jason Thompson said. "We were banged up a little bit today and played without Sophie, but we were still able to play well even in a loss. I think this tournament was clearly a benchmark for us."
Thompson, whose team plays at Robertsdale on Thursday, said he was pleased with his team's performance in the Shootout.
"We played great yesterday, and today we were great defensively," Thompson said. "Sophie played well yesterday until she got banged up. Maddie (McAlister) did a fantastic job in goal for us. Callie Wiist controlled it great up front. Overall we just did a great job."
Gulf Shores opened the season Monday with an 8-0 win over Citronelle.
