SPRING BIRD BANDING SESSION 2011

DATE/TIMES: Saturday through April 14, 7 a.m.-noon

LOCATION: Fort Morgan, 51 Alabama 180 W., Gulf Shores, the Alabama Gulf Coast is a critical stopover point as migratory birds return from Central and South America. Banding hours are from before dawn to mid-afternoon, depending on the flow of birds. Bring a lawn chair, binoculars and inquisitive mind but leave the pets at home.

An Emperor who cares for nothing but his wardrobe hires two weavers who promise him the finest suit of clothes from a fabric invisible to anyone who is unfit for his position or “just hopelessly stupid.” The Emperor cannot see the cloth himself, but pretends that he can for fear of appearing unfit for his position or stupid; his ministers do the same. When the swindlers report that the suit is finished, they dress him in mime and the Emperor then marches in procession before his subjects. A child in the crowd calls out that the Emperor is wearing nothing at all and the cry is taken up by others. The Emperor cringes, suspecting the assertion is true, but holds himself up proudly and continues the procession.

FIRST ALLEY TREASURES COMMUNITY YARD SALE

LOCATION: The Uptown Foley alley north behind Hotel Magnolia. Do you have antiques, furniture items, toys, household wares and other similar items you would like to sell?

COST: For $10 area residents are encouraged to rent a 10-foot-by-10-foot space in the alley to sell these goods.
