Gulf Shores, Spanish Fort split baseball double header

GULF SHORES, Alabama – The Gulf Shores Dolphins and Spanish Fort Toros split a Class 5A Area 2 double header on Thursday at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

The Dolphins bounced back from a 22-4 loss in the opener to beat the top-ranked Toros 2-1 in nine innings in Game 2. Matt Walters singled in Chris Brown for the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth, and Brown struck out nine and surrendered just one hit in nine innings to get the win for the Dolphins. Spanish Fort’s Ethan Walker had nine strikeouts and one run in 6 1/3 innings for the loss.

In the opener, Spanish Fort scored 16 runs in the first two innings on the way to the 22-4 win. Gunner Hendrix was the winning pitcher with three strikeouts and four runs on seven hits. The Toros sent 12 hitters to the plate in the first, 13 in the second and 11 in the fourth.

In the first inning Rob Perteet had an RBI triple, Brian Lane had an RBI single, Matt Hall and Jesse McCord drove in four runs on back-to-back doubles and Will Luft drove in a run with a double. In the second Reagan Eubanks hit two RBI singles, Myles York had an RBI single, McCord had a two-run triple, Luft drove in a run on a double and Lane drove in two runs with a double. After a quiet third inning the Toros added six more runs in the fourth. Hendrix and Jacob Abshire had back-to-back RBI hits, York had an RBI single, McCord added another two-run double and Luft had an RBI double.

Brandon Davis had a two-run home run, while Brown and Brooks Mason had RBI singles for Gulf Shores in the loss.

The Toros (24-5) visit BC Rain on April 9, while the Dolphins visit Baldwin County High on April 8 and Williamson April 9.
