Gulf Shores students use Iron Bowl competition to feed hungry

As if the Iron Bowl were not competitive enough, students at Gulf Shores Elementary School have brought new meaning to the state’s biggest contest.

“Our student council, which is made up of elected officers, has been having a canned food drive for the last two weeks,” explained Principal Julie Pierce.

In addition to bringing canned goods, which allowed students to dress in something other than there daily school uniform if they brought three items, money was collected as well. According to Pierce, the Bama fans brought in more than the Auburn Tiger fans, during this “canned” version of the Iron Bowl.

“All of the canned goods will be given to Christian Life Church and then distributed back throughout the community,” said Pierce.
