GULF SHORES, Alabama — The Gulf Shores boys and girls soccer teams swept the Citronelle Wildcats in Class 5A Section 1 soccer play on Thursday at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.
Jessica Chavez and Sophie Simantel scored two goals apiece, while Callie Wiist and freshman Morgan Campbell added goals for the Lady Dolphins, who improved to 7-2-1 overall and 4-0 in section play.
"Sophie has been fantastic for us working the ball in the middle of the field," Gulf Shores girls coach Jason Thompson said. "We are getting better at crossing the ball but we have got to get to where we finish more. We had some simple mental mistakes that we need to work on before we face Spanish Fort next week."
Thompson said the addition of Chavez, who sat out the beginning of the season with an injury, had been a benefit to his team the last two games.
"Chavez is getting back in playing shape and it is great to have her back," Thompson said. "It is great to see her moving the ball around well, especially up top."
Gulf Shores will host rival Spanish Fort, the defending 5A champion, next Friday at the Orange Beach Sportsplex in section play.
"I think we are going to have to step up our play," Thompson said. "I think physically our kids are prepared. We should have a good week of preparation next week. I think we will be ready. It will definitely be the toughest challenge we will face all year."
The Gulf Shores boys beat Citronelle 2-1 in the nightcap at the Sportsplex on Thursday.
The Dolphins trailed 1-0 at the half, but got a goal from Ben Taylor on a direct kick from Ivan Torres and Ian Meadows scored on a penalty kick in the second half to seal the win.
"We are always a second half team," Gulf Shores boys coach Tatum Saltz said. "In the second half defensively we were able to combat what they were doing. We just kind of wore them down there at the end. Had some good opportunities that we finally started finishing."
The Dolphins will host rival Spanish Fort at 7:30 p.m. next Friday at the Orange Beach Sportsplex.
