GULF SHORES, Ala.—The Gulf Shores Swim Team completed a successful summer 2015 swim season in the Gulf Coast Area Aquatics League Championship Meet. The meet was held at the Fairhope City Pool on July 24-25. The Dolphins, 1,816 points, finished in second place in their division behind Fairhope, 4,650 points, and ahead of third place Eastern Shore Piranhas, 1,684 points.
Gulf Shores sent 44 swimmers to the league championship meet. Twelve swimmers came home with high point award honors. Jack Biggs, age 6, Joseph Zarzaur, age 8, Graham Uter, age 8, were High Point Champions in their age group at the meet. Murray Reed, age 7, Brody Bledsoe, age 8, and Graham Uter, age 9, won High Point 1st runner-up awards for their divisions. Mason Clark, age 6, Catie Sanders, age 8, Cody Hall, age 10, Gabe Schoeder, age 11, Ruby Rosnagle, age 12, and Sarah Harr, age 13, were recognized as 2nd runner-up award winners.
Jack Biggs set two meet records during the Friday morning session of the meet. He is now the Boy’s 6 and under record holder for the 25 yard Backstroke and for the 50 yard Freestyle. Jack’s name will remain in the meet program for the league as long as he holds those records.
The Gulf Shores 8 and Under Boys took first and third place in the Freestyle and Medley relays at the meet. The relay teams consisted of the following boys: Miles Uter, Layne Reid, Bradley Bledsoe, Murray Reed, Joesph Zarzaur, Cooper Hopkins, Brody Bledsoe, Satchel Kornegay, Garrett Perry, Jack Biggs, Mason Clark, and Cohen Carlson.
Gulf Shores had 11 first place finishers and 17 second place finishers in the 114 events for individuals. The Dolphins won 2 of the 22 relay races and finished second in 6 others. Overall the Gulf Shores Dolphins swam their personal best times in 47% of the 191 individual races they contested at the meet. Only three swims were disqualified for rule infractions.
In addition to Jack Bigg’s meet records, there were five other team records established at the meet. Catie Sanders, age 8, set team records in the 25 yard Butterfly, 25 yard Freestyle and 50 yard Freestyle. Miles Uter set a record in the 8 year old 25 Freestyle. Jack Biggs also lowered his team record in the 25 yard Freestyle for 6 and under boys.
“We swam our best at the right moment,” said assistant coach David Lloyd. “We have never had so many high point award winners. We now have four names in the meet program as record holders. I think we did well against the Fairhope team that entered 142 swimmers in the meet. This was our third meet of the season where we were up against Eastern Shore. We won the first time, they won the second and we edged them out at the championship. A great season overall.”
The Dolphins are taking a seasonal break and will restart practicing at the Bodenhamer Center on September 1st. Gulf Shores Swim Team is a city sponsored program and is open to swimmers age 5 to 18.
