GULF SHORES, AL - The University of Alabama’s professional summer theatre, SummerTide, will bring the man in black “down, down, down” to Gulf Shores during its 12th season.
The cast of SummerTide will present Ring of Fire, a musical revue by Richard Maltby Jr., and Bill Meade. Inspired by the life and lyrics of Johnny Cash, Ring of Fire brings universal stories of love, home and family to the stage. The revue features more than two dozen songs by Cash including, “I Walk the Line,” “A Boy Named Sue,” “Folsom Prison Blues” and of course the title song, “Ring of Fire.”
All Shook Up director Stacy Alley returns this summer to direct this production. After the excitement and energy of last summer, Alley hopes to celebrate another icon with the Gulf Shores community.
“It’s not a concert, it’s a story,” Alley said. “There is not one person portraying Johnny Cash, but his life comes through in the music.”
Alley said she has been influenced by the Americana themes of the stories and is excited about the flexible possibilities for her cast and staging.
“There are so many fantastic moments in this production and whether it’s a gospel hymn or the title song, everyone will find themselves singing along with the cast at some point," she said.
Ring of Fire will run June 5 to July 3, 2015 at the George C. Meyer Performing Arts Center. Tickets are available for purchase at SummerTide.org or by calling the George C. Meyer Performing Arts Center box office after May 26 at 251-968-6721.
“The music is timeless,” Alley said, “and there’s something everyone can identify with in this show.”
Get ready to walk the line this summer with the cast and crew of Ring of Fire.
