GULF SHORES, Ala., — Gulf Shores Councilman Steve Jones noticed something as he made his way to and from the beach on Sunday afternoon for Jimmy Buffett’s “Concert for the Coast.” At 8:30 in the morning, the Gulf Shores fire and police departments were already on the scene to assist with issues related to the event. As Jones was leaving round 11 p.m., he noticed that the firemen and officers were still on hand.
“There have been no off days and it has been long days and I know there are some tired people, but we can’t thank our city employees enough for all of the hard work they have done.”
But maybe they can thank them, and maybe there can be an off day. As a matter of fact, Mayor Robert Craft is going to see to it that everyone working with the city, indeed, gets a paid off day, in recognition for all of the hard work and long hours they have been putting in.
“I want to see that we provide a day off for everybody that works for the city, with pay,” Craft told the council on Monday. “Everybody will get one paid off day of their choosing. They will need to go through their supervisor to make sure it doesn’t affect anything, and the supervisors are required to take a day off, too.”
Craft said the city would send around a memo informing employees of the earned day off.
“We just need to allow them to stop and take a deep breath. Summer is not over so we all need to recover, and then get back and get ready to go,” said Craft.
