FOLEY, Ala. — Habitat for Humanity’s upcoming WomenBuild project needs your help. If you’re not one for hammers, nails, insulation or siding, there’s still a way for you to be involved; just round up your old books.
Used books are currently being collected to be sold at the annual Used Book Sale in July. Organizers are looking for adult books no more than five years old, unless they are classics. Also wanted are children’s books in excellent condition, cookbooks, books on tape, and magazines from the last two months. Reader’s Digest books and encyclopedias cannot be accepted.
Books can be dropped off at the ReStore at 22970 U.S. Hwy. 98 in Foley or the Habitat Office at 12678 County Road 65 in Foley.
All proceeds from the sale will benefit the second WomenBuild house this fall.
WomenBuild was started in 1999 as a way for women to learn building skills, while still becoming an active member of the community.
“WomenBuild is a special build,” Habitat for Humanity’s Rosemary Harris said. “We want to keep women involved and women need to know how to build. That way they can certainly take care of their own home maintenance. Our training is totally free and women can volunteer and learn how to tile and do dry wall and roofing. There’s many areas of opportunity for them when they do volunteer on any build that we have.”
The next build is scheduled for this October in Robertsdale, for a currently unknown family.
The crew is comprised of women only. However, there will be males present to provide training to those who need it.
“This is specifically driven for women to communicate and meet their social needs,” Harris said. “It’s just a great opportunity for them to learn how to build and be involved in their community.”
Since its inception in 1999 WomenBuild has completed ten homes. Most recently, the team completed a home on Rooster Lane in Foley.
Habitat always needs volunteers, but they are most needed this time of the year.
“In the winter we get a lot of what we call our snow angels,” Harris said. “They come and help us build, but after March the volunteerism does slow down. Church builds have a good many volunteers, but outside of that there’s always room for more.”
Those interested in volunteering can contact Harris at the Habitat for Humanity office at 943-7268. Volunteers do not need any building experience, but must be over the age of 14.
