GULF SHORES, Ala. — Their message is simple – NO to offshore oil drilling and YES to clean energy.

Organizers of Hands Across The Sand, a movement that will take place on Saturday, hope that the message is sent loud and clear.

In February, more than 10,000 citizens of Florida representing more than 60 municipalities and 90 different beaches across the state joined hands to protest the efforts by the Florida Legislature and the U.S. Congress to lift the ban on oil drilling in the near and off shores of the state. The event proved to be the largest gathering in the history of Florida united against oil drilling.

This time, organizers hope the whole country will get involved, especially considering the effects from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

“On Saturday, we are going to gather at the public beach in Gulf Shores at the end of Hwy. 59,” said local organizer and Gulf Shores resident Lori Keelin. “We will be there beginning at 11, and will join hands at noon.”

Keelin said the event will actually happen worldwide, and that people from every state and country will be involved.

“Originally we were just going to try to do a coastal event around the United States, but as it turns out, every state in the United States has a group somewhere that is going to join in with us at 12 o’clock.”

According to Keelin, it is very important we recognize that changes need to be made in regards to our energy source. So people from all around the globe will join hands for 15 minutes in order to make their statement.

“We are figuring out now that oil and water do not mix,” Keelin said.

Hands Across The Sand was founded by Dave Rauschkolb, a surfer and the owner of three restaurants on the beach in Seaside, Fla., who formed the statewide gathering in Florida.

“The image is powerful, the message simple,” said Rauschkolb. “No to offshore oil drilling, yes to clean energy. We are drawing a line in the sand against offshore oil drilling along America’s beaches and in solidarity events across America and around the world. No one industry should be able to place entire coastal economies and marine environments at risk with dangerous, dirty mistakes.”

Hands Across The Sand is endorsed by national and international environmental organizations including Sierra Club, Audubon, Surfrider, Oceana, Greenpeace, Defenders of Wildlife, Alaska Wilderness League, Ocean Conservancy, Friends of the Earth, Environment America, 350, MoveOn.org, Center for Biological Diversity and CleanEnergy.org.
