John R. “Bob” Hanzlik, 88, a resident of Gulf Shores since 1980, died Saturday, July 10, 2010 at his home in Gulf Shores.

He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran. He was first lieutenant serving as a pilot on a B-24 with the 8th Air Force, 2nd Division, 389th Group 577 Squadron. He flew 27 combat missions. He was shot down twice and was a prisoner of war for six months.

He was a graduate of the University of Michigan and served over 20 years with the Beloit Corporation in Beloit, Wis., before becoming a 12-year member of the Gulf Shores City Council. He and his wife Pat enjoyed traveling to Europe.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Pat Hanzlik of Gulf Shores; four sons, David (Rita) Hanzlik of Gulf Shores, Steve (Jodi) Hanzlik of Ft. Collins, Colo., Mary (Amy) Hanzlik of Pickerington, Ohio, and Bill (Maribeth) Hanzlik of Greenwood Village, Colo.; daughter, Karen (Ron) Hoaglund of Zionsville, Ind.; and 10 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4 at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church in Gulf Shores.

The family requests memorial donations be made to Community Hospice of Baldwin County, 2770 S. McKenzie St., Foley, AL 36535.
