SPANISH FORT, Ala. — Families struggling to make ends meet as the new school year kicks into gear have at least one local source for assistance.
The Uniform Closet, an outreach of Spanish Fort United Methodist Church, provided 184 families with uniforms and school supplies in preparation for the start of classes Aug. 16.
The long-time ministry is by no means a one-shot operation.
Karen Dotson, chairman of the church’s services committee, said the outreach predates her arrival five years ago, and it serves a vital role in both the community at large and among the congregation.
“One of our missions is to serve Christ, his church and our community, and it is really evident that during these rough economic times families are hurting, and it really affects the children,” Dotson said.
“Gently used” uniforms can be donated and are laundered if necessary, sorted and hung, Dotson said. Families can receive assistance throughout the year as students outgrow items; and jackets, coats, sweatshirts and even shoes are also accepted.
Supporters can make cash donations directly to Spanish Fort UMC—clearly designating the funds for “uniforms”—and Dotson said 100 percent of any money collected goes toward purchasing new uniforms and supplies.
“We have no administrative costs, so every penny helps this ministry,” she said. “It’s really a large, ongoing ministry, and we are so happy to be able to meet a direct need in our community during these difficult times.”
Dotson said anyone interested in learning more can call the church office at 626-1334. Bagged donations can be dropped off at the office.
