Donald W. Haskins Jr., 89, a native of Rhinebeck, N.Y., and a resident of Fairhope, died Thursday, June 5, 2008.
He was a World War II veteran who fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He lived for many years in Troy, N.Y., and after retiring as chief editorial writer for the Albany Times Union, Albany, N.Y., moved to Fairhope. He continued his love of writing by contributing many articles to the Mobile Press Register. He also loved to read and play golf.
He was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Elizabeth McHaffie Haskins; daughter, Julie Haskins Bailey; son, Alan; granddaughter, Jennifer Connaway; and two brothers, John and Ralph.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian of Fairhope; two sons, David (Joye) of Gloversville, N.Y., and John of Calabash, N.C.; stepson, John (Lois) Nixon of Gustavus, Ark.; sister, Margaret Angle of Cobleskill, N.Y.; son-in-law, Anthony (Bonnie) Bailey of Lewes, Del.; daughter-in-law, Donna Haskins of Fairview, Pa.; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 11 a.m. June 21 at the Rhinebeck Reformed Church, 6368 Mill St., Rhinebeck, NY.
The family requests memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Delaware Valley Chapter, for the Julie Haskins Bailey Center, 399 Market St., Philadelphia, PA.
