Davida Richerson Hastie, born Oct. 12, 1924, died Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Thomas Hospital in Fairhope, after suffering a heart attack on March 4.

She was a widow of John Melvin Hastie who died July 4, 1982. Together they owned and managed Live Oak Landing on Tensaw River for 32 years.

A life time resident of Stockton, she was a member of Stockton Presbyterian Church where she was the first woman ever elected to the office of Elder.

She will be remembered as one of South Alabama’s foremost historians and as a lover and preserver of natural resources. In many ways, she was, indeed, a pioneer woman. She was committed to and concerned for the environment long before environmental concerns became popular. She has left her mark on the woods and waters of this area which she loved so dearly.

Those who have known and loved her best knew her as one who sought no personal glory or fame, but spent so much of herself loving and providing for those about her. She was deeply committed to preserving the beauty of the present and the remembrances of the past for her grandchildren and for future generations to come.

A virtual storehouse of knowledge, she was quick to share her abundant archives and resources with any and all who called upon her. In view of her dedication to and love of Stockton, her hometown, and Baldwin County.

Survivors include a son, John Melvin Hastie Jr.; daughter, Lynn Hastie Bozone; grandchildren, Tammy J. Flannagan, John Hamilton Hastie, Amanda K. Hastie, Jordan Hastie and Hannah Hastie; great-grandchildren, J. Cooper, John Robert, Colin Flanagan and Kennedy Hastie; a number of nieces and nephews.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the Baldwin County Bicentennial Park, Stockton, Baldwin County Department of Archives and History, Attention, Bicentennial Park 312 Court House Square Suite 26 Bay Minette, AL 36507. 251-580-1897.
