James Olen Haynie Sr., 75, a native of Prattville, and a resident of the Crossroads Community of Bay Minette, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008 at Washington County Hospital in Chatom.
He graduated from McGill Institute in Mobile; was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a longtime employee of Bender’s Shipyard, starting in 1961 and retiring as a machinist superintendent / facility manager.
Survivors include his wife, Mattie Louise Byrd Haynie of Crossroads; two sons, James O. (Trula) Haynie Jr. and Gregory C. Haynie Sr., both of Mobile; grandchildren, Kandii L. Haynie, James O. Haynie III, Melinda Steveson, Marylin Louise Haynie and Gregory Charles Haynie Jr.; and two sisters, Joyce Lemery of Mobile and Sharon Rockwell of Lucedale, MS.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 6 from the chapel of Norris Funeral Home with Clyde T. Moore Sr. officiating. Haynie’s grandson James O. Haynie III played the piano and the singer was Howard Byrd. Burial followed at Bay Minette Cemetery.
The pallbearers were, Pat Morgan, Eddie Harris, Nathaniel Mayo, Leslie Middendorf, Richard Quinley and Winsten Wood. Honorary pallbearers were Thomas B. Bender Jr. and Leroy H. Benton III.
Arrangements were made by Norris Funeral Home, Bay Minette.
