Foley Mayor Ralph Hellmich has taken his oath of office to serve as a board member of ARSEA/APEAL, a statewide organization that represents current and future state and local gov-ernment retirees.

Ralph Hellmich was elected mayor of the City of Foley in 2020 following a 39-year career with the Alabama Oil and Gas Board. He retired from the board in 2019 as a regional supervisor and was responsible for overseeing operations in the southern half of Alabama.

A Foley City Council member for 16 years, he currently serves as a chairman of the board for Riviera Utilities and is a member of the Foley Planning Commission.

Hellmich is a lifetime member of the Wolf Bay Watershed Watch and president-elect of the Uni-versity of Alabama Geological Sciences Advisory Board.

“Mayor Hellmich has been a strong presence in our organization since his retirement, and he has once again proven to be an able and capable leader in the posts he has held,” ARSEA/APEAL Executive Director Liane Kelly said. “Because our members have careers in public service, we are fortunate that they are willing to continue serving others as officers in our association.”

ARSEA/APEAL was formerly known as the Alabama Retired State Employees’ Association, which was founded in 1980, and the Alabama Public Employees’ Advocacy League, which was created in 1996, until the two groups combined and rebranded.

The Alabama Retired State Employees’ Association is an 19,000-member not-for-profit organization created to protect and improve the retirement benefits of state and local government employees and retirees participating in the Retirement Systems of Alabama.
