Evans Gavin “Jabbo” Helton, 91, a native of Mississippi and a resident of Fairhope, died Saturday, June 7, 2008 at his residence.

He was a 32nd degree Scottish-Rite Mason, a decorated World War II veteran, a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi, a fireman with the city of Hattiesburg, MS and a master pipefitter.

He was preceded in death by a son, Leon “Jabbo” Gavin Helton.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Nancy Petway Helton of Fairhope; son, Thomas “Tom” J. (Janis) Helton of Gulf Shores; daughter, Annette H. (Jim) Lay of Montrose; brother, Walter T. Helton of Sweeney, Texas; seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services and visitation were held Tuesday, June 10 from the chapel of Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home in Fairhope, with the Rev. Charles Brady and the Rev. Pierre Burns officiating.

Graveside services followed at Pine Crest Cemetery, Mobile.

Pallbearers were Dr. J. Gavin Helton, Dr. E. Scott Helton, Jamie A. Lay, Ginny Helton Casey, J. Mandy Lay, Chuck M. Helton, Jacob Helton, and Jonathon Clarke. Honorary Pallbearers were Dr. Larry McGee, Dr. Albert Coker, Dr. Terry Wilsdorf, and Dr. Hercules Panayiotou.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the Disabled American Veterans, American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
