Evans Gavin “Jabbo” Helton, 91, a native of Mississippi and a resident of Fairhope, died Saturday, June 7, 2008 at his residence.
He was a 32nd degree Scottish-Rite Mason, a decorated World War II veteran, a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi, a fireman with the city of Hattiesburg, Miss., and a master pipefitter.
He was preceded in death by a son, Leon “Jabbo” Gavin Helton.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Nancy Petway Helton of Fairhope; son, Thomas “Tom” J. (Janis) Helton of Gulf Shores,; daughter, Annette H. (Jim) Lay of Montrose; brother, Walter T. Helton of Sweeney, Texas; seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren; three step-great grandchildren; many other relatives and friends.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. with funeral services at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 10, from the chapel of Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home, Fairhope. Graveside services will follow at 1 p.m. at Pine Crest Cemetery, Mobile.
The family requests memorial donations be made to the Disabled American Veterans, American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
