BAY MINETTE, Ala.—Faulkner State Community College's Lady Sun Chiefs grabbed an early lead and raced to a 70-58 league victory over visiting L.B. Wallace Monday night in Bay Minette.
Coach Linda Pitts' Sun Chiefs led by as many as eighteen in the second half before taking the 12 point win. Faulkner improved to 12-10 overall and 5-3 in the league. It was Faulkner's third win in a row.
Tierra Henry netted 16 points to pace the Sun Chiefs and she was joined in double figure scoring by Rachel Bell who added 13 points. Tequisha Robinson scored nine while Kelsey Hutchins and Mary Robinson added eight apiece. Tori Lowe led the Lady Saints from Andalusia with a game high 19-point effort. Britanny Moore and Sylwanna Rogers each had eleven points for LBW.
Diamond Williams led Faulkner on the boards with eight rebounds while Hutchins had seven boards. Devan Cleveland dished out five assists for the winners. Faulkner connected on nine of seventeen three pointers in the contest and some early hot shooting from beyond the arc helped stake them out to a quick lead.
Bell, Robinson, and Hutchins all drained long threes early in the game as Faulkner jumped to a 20-10 lead.
The lead grew to fifteen on a pair of Henry’s driving layups and despite a late charge by LBW, Faulkner led by nine (36-27) at the intermission. Henry sank a three and then had a steal and layup to quickly make it 41-27. Baskets by Tequisha Robinson, Hutchins, and Henry pushed the advantage to
fourteen. A three from Mary Robinson and a Henry layup made it 46-31.
Bell then scored nine consecutive FSCC points on a pair of long jumpers, two free throws and a three pointer from the corner. That made the lead seventeen at 60-43 and LBW never got closer than ten the rest of the way.
"It was good to get a win tonight. We had some players play well tonight," Pitts said after the victory.
Faulkner returns to action Monday as they host another division foe, Alabama Southern, at 5:15 p.m. at Robertson Arena in Bay Minette.
