FAIRHOPE, Alabama — The AHSAA baseball state playoffs begin today, and six teams from Baldwin County begin their quests to reach the finals in Montgomery this afternoon.
The Class 6A Fairhope Pirates (29-6), who were ranked No. 3 in last week’s Alabama Sports Writers Association baseball poll, will host McGill-Toolen at 5 and 7:30 p.m. today at Volanta Park. If the teams split today, they will play at 1 p.m. Saturday at Volanta.
The Pirates won the 6A Area 3 title, while the Yellow Jackets are the Area 4 runner up. Fairhope is 2-0 against McGill this season, with 2-1 and 11-1 wins against the Jackets. McGill is 14-18 overall and lost four consecutive games to close out the regular season.
In Class 5A, the two-time defending champion Spanish Fort Toros (28-7) will host the St. Paul’s Saints on “The Hill” starting at 4 and 6:30 p.m. If they split the double header, the third-ranked Toros will host the Saints at 3 p.m. Saturday.
The Toros finished unbeaten in 5A Area 2 play, while the Saints are the Area 1 runner up. St. Paul’s defeated the Toros 9-6 in their only meeting earlier this season. Spanish Fort started the season on a four-game losing streak, but closed on an 11-game winning streak that included a double header sweep of 6A power Fairhope. St. Paul’s lost its last two games against UMS-Wright and Baker.
Class 3A No. 6 Bayside Academy (24-5) will host Geneva at 4 and 6:30 p.m. in Daphne today, with an “if necessary” game Saturday at noon.
The Admirals ended the season on a four-game win streak and won the 3A Area 1 title with a 7-1 record. Geneva is the Area 2 runner up.
In Bay Minette, last year’s 6A runner-up Baldwin County High Tigers will host Robertsdale in a double header at 5 and 7:30 p.m. today at the newly dedicated Jerry Wright Field at BCHS. If they split, the Tigers and Bears will meet for the deciding game on Saturday at 1 p.m. at BCHS.
BCHS (19-9) won the 6A Area 4 title, while Robertsdale (16-15) finished as the runner up in Area 3 after closing out the regular season with a series win over Foley. The teams met once this season, a 9-5 Robertsdale win to open the season in the Hank Aaron BayBears High School Classic. BCHS has won five consecutive games.
Also in Class 5A, the Gulf Shores Dolphins will visit the Faith Academy Rams at 4:30 and 7 p.m. today with an “if necessary” game Saturday at 1 p.m. Gulf Shores finished as the 5A Area 2 runner up and Faith won Area 1.
