LOXLEY, Alabama — A Birmingham man was reportedly driving a stolen vehicle on Tuesday afternoon when he was killed after losing control of the vehicle while traveling in excess of 130 miles per hour on Highway 59 north of Loxley, according to a release issued by the Alabama Highway Patrol.
Shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday, while running stationary radar, a highway patrolman observed a 2006 Infiniti G35 traveling north on Highway 59 in excess of 90 miles per hour.
According to the release, the trooper pulled onto the roadway, activated his emergency equipment and noticed that the vehicle had accelerated to 132 miles per hour.
Within seconds, the driver of the vehicle lost control in a sweeping left-hand curve, left the roadway and overturned after striking a culvert, a telephone pole and another vehicle parked at a residence.
The driver of the vehicle, Troy Christian Honeycutt, 34, of Birmingham was ejected during the crash and pronounced dead at the scene. Honeycutt was the sole occupant and apparently not wearing a seatbelt.
During the investigation, troopers discovered that the vehicle had been reported stolen with the Key West (Fla.) Police Department. Troopers were assisted on scene by members of the Loxley Police and Fire departments.
