DAPHNE, Ala. — Robert Glennon on Sunday, Feb. 28 will present a program based on his latest book, “Alabama History on the Air.” This presentation, set for the Daphne Senior Center, will include stories of rivalries, romance and adventure during the developing years of the Alabama and Mississippi Territories as they were told by John F. Glennon on Mobile’s first radio station, WDOX, in the 1930s. This series of radio programs began in 1935 and aired three times a week for two years — giving its listeners incentive to feel better about themselves, their well-being and their chances of surviving the Great Depressioon.
Glennon is a fifth generation of the Sibley and Glennon families. The Sibleys were Baldwin County revolutionaries in Anglo-Spanish times and were the founders of the town of Montrose. The Glennons were a prominent Mobile family from the late 1850s and were owners of the Grand Hotel at Point Clear for 38 years.
Bob graduated from Mississippi State University and attended Loyola University College of Law in New Orleans. He worked in the telecommunications industry and retired in 1997 as vice president of two major international corporations, Alcatel USA and California Microwave. He is an Emeritus-member of two Cellular Telephone Industry Boards, past president of the National Management Association, North Texas Region, and he continues as a consultant to communication companies in the U.S., Europe and South America.
Bob is a frequent speaker to schools and civic groups on Alabama history. He and his wife, Rita, live in Point Clear.
Light refreshments will be provided. Admission is free and the public is welcome.
The Baldwin County Historical Society was founded in 1923 to bring citizens of Baldwin County together to ensure the preservation of the rich heritage of this area, a spokesperson said.
