Historical Society plans Sunday tour of Swift-Coles home

BAY MINETTE, Ala. — The Baldwin County Historical Society will meet Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the Swift-Coles home in Bon Secour for a guided tour conducted by the historic home volunteer docents.

The Swift-Coles Historic Home has recently opened for public tours on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 10 a.m., and the last tour of the day is at 3 p.m. Admission to the home is $3 on regular tour days. However, for the Historical Society Meeting, the admission is by volunteer donation in any amount.

The home was built in 1882 by Charles Swift near his mill on Schoolhouse Creek and the Bon Secour River. The Swift family lived in the home until 1976. The home was then acquired by Nick Coles, who bequeathed the home to Baldwin County.

The home is operated by the Baldwin County Historic Development Commission and the Department of Archives and History. The 16-room tidewater mansion is furnished in period antiques, featuring a 14-foot cypress table in the dining room, and many fine examples of American and European furniture.

The original heart pine walls, floors and ceilings were cut at the Swift Lumber Co. mill on the property at the turn of the 20th century.

The Baldwin County Historical Society is open to all persons interested in Baldwin County History, and guests are welcome at all meetings.
