“Vertigo” has been named the best film of all time, according to the British Film Institute's Sight and Sound 2012 magazine poll. It is no wonder that “Vertigo” was created by one of the most famous 20th century directors, the Master of Suspense, the inimitable Alfred Hitchcock. Presenting Hitchcock, a non-credit class, will be offered for the first time by the University of South Alabama Baldwin County starting in March.
Instructor Mary Riser said through the viewing and study of six of his best films, students will peer into Hitchcock’s world and try to discern what made him unique. His techniques as well as his personality blended into his efforts to produce an emotion in the cinema audience.
Hitchcock was in charge, controlling every idea, every moment of the actor. In many ways, he was also controlling the audience.
“Come and watch how he still does,” Riser said.
Dr. Elliott Lauderdale will also be introducing one of the films.
Though Hitchcock feared suspense in real life, refusing even driving a car, this son of a stern English grocer, made more than 50 feature films filled with suspense. He worked from the 1920s into the 1970s, creating movie after movie, but never garnering an Academy Award for Best Director. Yet he remains one of the world’s most admired filmmakers.
