Ida Allen Holt, 87, retired educator and community volunteer, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2007 at her residence.

She taught school for 40-plus years in Baldwin and Mobile County School Systems. She began her teaching career at the Anna T. Jeanes School in Baldwin County and continued educating students at the Emerson School in Mobile then retiring in 1994 from Stanton Road Elementary.

After retirement she volunteered at Thomas Hospital in Fairhope, American Red Cross and as a docent at the Museum of Mobile. She was a reading tutor at Council Traditional School and at St. James Catholic School and served on the board of St. Mary’s Home.

She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary Society, Alabama Council of Catholic Women, Alabama Education Association and a life member of the Baldwin County Teachers Association and served as its historian

She was preceded in death by her parents, Irving Cleveland Allen and Bessie Smith Allen, sisters, Helen Guice, Polly Bonner, brothers Irving Leonard Allen and Rudolph Allen.

Survivors include a sister, Dorothy A. Williams of Fairhope; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Visitation was held Friday, Aug. 31 at Christian Benevolent Funeral Home.

Visitation will also be held beginning at 9 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 1 at St. James Catholic Church, 714 College St., Prichard with Father Joseph McKinley officiating.

Interment will follow at Montrose Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jessie Davis, Charles E. Hall, Thomas Gill, Roy Jackson, Lee Portis and Vincent Tinsley.

A reception will follow interment at Twin Beach AME Zion Church Fairhope.

The family wishes to acknowledge with sincere gratitude the prayers, the many sincere expressions of sympathy, thoughtful deeds and other acts of kindness extended during this time of bereavement.
