Homeless shelter asks for Baldwin County residents’ support

DAPHNE, Ala. — Baldwin County cities don’t have a metropolitan downtown area like Mobile, but that doesn’t mean the county is exempt from homeless people in its city limits.

A spokesperson for McKemie Place — a Mobile-based homeless shelter for women — spoke to Daphne residents at the bi-monthly “Coffee with the Mayor” event Thursday and asked residents for support because the shelter serves women from Baldwin County.

“We’re asking Baldwin County to become more effectively involved in the process we already have,” Christine Greene, shelter director, said. Greene said that anything — from financial support to donating clothes, sheets or towels — is needed.

The shelter is open seven days a week from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. Greene said the shelter can serve 65 women per night, and on an average it serves between 53 to 65 women nightly. Occupants receive dinner, a bed and a breakfast or snack the following morning before they leave.

“We have volunteer groups who prepare a meal for 65 people,” Greene said about dinner, noting that Christ the King Church and Church on the Eastern Shore are two Baldwin County groups with volunteers at the shelter.

Greene said the Mobile facility serves homeless women from Baldwin County. She said that on Tuesday night she had nine women from Baldwin County.

“On an average, for the year 2010, I had six per night from Baldwin County.”

Greene mentioned Spanish Fort, Daphne, Fairhope, Summerdale, Robertsdale, Orange Beach and Gulf Shores as some of the cities in Baldwin County that occupants have said they are from.

“We have an intake form where we complete and do an assessment of each person who enters the shelter,” Greene said when asked how the shelter knows where individuals are from.

Greene said that some of the social-service agencies provide transportation for an individual from Baldwin County to Mobile.

McKemie Place serves homeless women in Washington County, Mobile County and Baldwin County.

Coffee with the Mayor happens on the last Thursday of every other month at 8:30 a.m. in City Hall.
