DAPHNE, Ala. — Dr. Barry Lee Booth — a United States military veterans advocate — will give a presentation on American heroes at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Catherine Place on Mercy Medical’s campus in Daphne.
The program will be hosted by Honor Flight — an organization that honors America’s World War II veterans by transporting them to Washington, D.C. to reflect at the memorials. “They take (the veterans) to the memorial, but when they come back, the airport is packed with everyone in uniforms,” said Cecilia Mace, communications manager for Mercy Medical. “It is a true hero’s welcome. It is something everybody should come out and see.”
Booth — a Spanish Fort resident and director of Guardian Programs for Honor Flight South Alabama — helped organize the placement of a Vietnam Memorial at the USS Alabama Battleship Park. He is from Charleston, W. Va., and he graduated from Auburn University and the University of Alabama School of Dentistry.
He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and spent time in Vietnam as part of the Marine Corps.
Booth is a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America, Sons of the American Revolution and a life member of the American Legion Post 199 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. In 2005, Alabama Gov. Bob Riley appointed Booth to the USS Alabama Battleship Commission, and Booth also serves on the Spanish Fort Education Enrichment Foundation.
For several years, he was part of the U.S. Naval Academy’s recruitment program, and he continues to be an active supporter of ROTC programs at local high schools.
The inaugural Honor Flight took place in May of 2005. Six small planes flew out of Springfield, Ohio taking 12 World War II veterans on a visit to the memorial in Washington, DC.
The Honor Flight presentation admission is free and light refreshments will be provided to attendees. Call 625-2558 for more information.
Catherine Place is at 27440 County Road 13.
