MOBILE – The good news was that the Gulf Shores Dolphins found themselves in the final six of the 12th Annual Hank Aaron Classic baseball tournament. After last weeks round robin series, hosted by UMS-Wright, Baker, Spanish Fort, Robertsdale, and Satsuma, 20 teams were narrowed down to six and the Dolphins found themselves in the mix, facing off against Baker on Monday morning at The Hank.
The Hornets stung the Dolphins 3-0 to capture fifth place overall.
Both teams went 2-1 in last weeks first three games, but junior pitcher Joe Hernandez grabbed the win for Baker, giving up only four hits on the day.
After a first inning walk by right fielder Austin Carpenter, and a single to right by first baseman Chad Hartley, it looked as if Gulf Shores would get on the board first, but both men were left stranded, and the Dolphins came away with nothing.
Still scoreless in the bottom of the third, Baker came alive with RBIs from Alex Summers, Phillip McDuffie, and Jordan Patterson.
Gulf Shores had a chance to strike again in the top of the sixth when Carpenter was hit by a pitch, followed by a walk from Collin Blankenship.
Later, Hunter Harris lined into a double play to end the inning and the shutout prevailed. With six of the nine Hornet starters getting hits, shortstop Brooks Bobinger led the team, going 2-for-3 with a single and a double, along with Patterson who was 2-for-3 on the day. Kolby Spicer led the way offensively for the Dolphins, finishing the day 2-for-3.
