BAY MINETTE — North Baldwin Infirmary is taking a proactive approach to saving children who are involved in car accidents.

The hospital is putting together a cookbook filled with local residents' recipes to sell. Proceeds from the sales will fund the WHALE (We Have A Little Emergency) project.

The project is an identification program that provides decals and emergency information to be attached to baby car seats and booster seats.

"The WHALE program kit includes special labeling that attaches to the rear of a car seat displaying medical information and emergency contact numbers," NBI Public Relations Coordinator Charlette Murphy. "This means, in the event of an accident, first responders will have information on the child if the driver becomes unconscious," she said.

The kit also contains a decal to place on the vehicle windshield directing first responders to look for the information on the car seat.

The fundraiser is in its infancy right now, with the hospital accepting recipes for the cookbook.

"Recipe forms can be downloaded at www.nbinfirmary.com/team_events.htm," Murphy said. The forms can be faxed to (251) 580-1726 or dropped off at various sites throughout the hospital.

Deadline for submissions is July 20. Murphy said she hopes the books will be ready for sale by Christmas Fest.
