Marie Louise House, 93, a native of Belgium and long-time resident of Fairhope, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008.

She was born Marie Louise Hecq on March 12, 1915 in Slobecq, Belgium. She became a pharmacist and worked in Belgium prior to meeting Col. John M. House Jr., who was stationed there during World War II. They married on July 2, 1947 and were married almost 50 years, when he died on June 25, 1997 in Fairhope. They lived in Fairhope since 1965 when he retired from the U.S. Army.

She was a long-time member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Fairhope and a devoted viewer of the Eternal Word Television Network. She enjoyed gardening and walking, and was very fond of her faithful caregivers Melinda Durgin and Alexis Webb-Durgin.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and stepson, Col. John M. House III of Wichita, Kan.

Survivors include a sister, Marie Antoinette Laqneau-Hecq of Belgium; three step-grandchildren, Janice Brunks of Olathe, Kan., John M. (Mary) House IV of Champaign, Ill., and Col. James (Cynthia) House (ret.) of Ft. Worth, Texas; nine great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m, Friday, Oct. 10 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Burial will be held at 12:30 p.m. at Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Fla.
