House on Emerille Drive in Foley catches on fire Tuesday afternoon

The Foley Fire Department responded to a house fire at Emerille Drive Tuesday afternoon, which Foley Fire Chief Joseph Darby said destroyed the house beyond repair.

“It’s a total loss,” he said.

Darby said believes that there were occupants in the house at the time of the fire, and they all made it out of the house safely with no injures, but he cannot confirm it.

“I’m still in the beginning stages of the investigation,” Darby said. “I do believe there were juveniles in the house.”

Darby said he does not know what caused the fire and cannot confirm where it started.

“When we got to the scene the fire was strong, and we made a decision to protect the houses next door and keep the fire from spreading,” he said.

A car sitting in the driveway was burnt from the fire. Darby said it was “not road worthy” and was “being repaired.”

“The car didn’t start the fire. The fire spread from the house to the car,” he said.

Kristin Spain, who lives south of the scene, said she and another nearby resident ran to the scene to make sure no one was in danger.

“Me and a neighbor ran over as quick as possible,” she said. “We banged on the doors and broke the windows to make sure there were no people inside. The wind was blowing south, so I banged on the windows of the house next door and hopped the fence and got the dog out of the backyard and to safety.”

Spain said one occupant got the two younger occupants out of the house safely, but nothing is confirmed.

Shasta Carbajal said she lives one house north of the scene and was inside with her kids at the time of the fire.

“A neighbor knocked on my door and told me there was a fire, so I got my kids out immediately,” she said.

“Due to conditions, we requested the Gulf Shores Fire Department to come out and assist,” Darby said. “They brought two trucks. We’re still trying to maintain a presence in the town. We’re thankful for them coming to assist.”
