BAY MINETTE — Bay Minette Police officers arrested a Houston couple Sunday after finding numerous bags of various drugs on them and in their moving truck.

According to Chief Michael Rowland, officers were called to the Star Motel on Second Street in reference to a report of property damage.

"Upon arrival, officers were told by the motel owner that he suspected one of the guests of damaging one of the buildings at the motel," Rowland said.

He said the moving truck the suspect was driving apparently struck a television cable and pulled it away from the building.

When officers spoke with the suspect, 27-year-old James Randall Britt Jr., about the incident, they noticed the smell of marijuana.

"Officers immediately noticed the smell of marijuana emanating from Mr. Britt's person and inquired about the smell," Rowland said. "At that time, Mr. Britt was found to be in possession of a small amount of marijuana and was placed under arrest."

Rowland said officers then interviewed Britt's wife, 23-year-old Jessica Britt, who admitted she and her husband had other drugs as well and consented to a search of the truck.

"Upon searching, the officers found a quantity of other controlled substances that were packaged in small plastic bags," Rowland said.

James Britt was arrested and charged with second-degree possession of marijuana, for counts of possession of controlled substances and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is being held in the Baldwin County Jail on a $22,000 bond.

Jessica Britt was arrested and charged with four counts of possession of controlled substances $21,000 bond.
