‘Howl’oween events abound in Spanish Fort

SPANISH FORT, Ala.—Yeah, we know.

It’s all about the trick-or-treating.

But there’s certainly no shortage of frightfully fantastic events planned across the city this weekend to help satiate your inner ghouls and goblins until Sunday night’s main event.

Reagan Sellers of Daphne has volunteered to return to the Eastern Shore Centre Friday with her own three children and three nephews.

*The shopping center will again offer three hours of trick-or-treating throughout the development beginning at 5 p.m., followed immediately by an 8 p.m. screening of family-friendly “Casper” at the Fountain.

“They had a great time last year, and we all had a good time watching the movie when it was over. Kind of helped get a little of the sugar out of their systems,” Sellers said.

The festivities will continue Saturday with two events targeting children and families.

*Spanish Fort Elementary School’s Fall Festival begins at 9 a.m. Saturday with proceeds from activity ticket sales and a raffle benefitting the PTA.

Parent Laura Mixon said the four-hour extravaganza will include arts and crafts, carnival games, inflatables, food, relay races, a cake walk, a pitching booth, tattoos and face-painting just to name a few.

“We’re also going to have a D.J. and there will be more than 25 local vendors set up selling things and promoting their businesses,” Mixon said.

*Meanwhile, 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center will host its second annual Trick-or-Treat celebration from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m.

The free event will offer games, arts and crafts, movies in the Tensaw Theater and “plenty of candy,” said 5 Rivers Assistant Manager Shonda Borden. In addition, participants can step aboard the haunted hayride through the woods known as  “The Swamp Buggy.”

The children’s portion of the event concludes at 5 p.m. with a costume contest — with prizes for the top three contestants — while adults can hang around a little longer for a 7 p.m. screening of the R-rated “Shadow of the Vampire” in the Tensaw Theater. The award-winning 2000 film stars John Malkovich as the German director of the classic 1921 film “Nosferatu.”

“Willem Dafoe plays Max Schreck, the actor that is a vampire … or vampire that is an actor — whichever way you prefer,” Borden said.

*And speaking of movies, Premiere Cinemas at the Eastern Shore Centre will host its annual 11:30 p.m. screening of George A. Romero’s, “Night of the Living Dead” on Saturday.

“Tickets are going to be free, but we’ll have to stop when we fill the theater, so I encourage everybody to come on out early and have a good time,” said Premiere Cinema Director Will Sanders of the 1968 cult classic.
