Laurene K. Stoakes Howser, born April 11, 1926, died Thursday, April 15, 2010.
She was a devoted wife and mother.
She graduated South High School in Denver and attended t he University of Denver and was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. She was a champion athlete in her younger years as the State of Colorado Tennis Champion; was an avid skier and Olympic ski team candidate prior to the cancellation of the Olympic Games in 1944. After a devastating ski accident ended her career, Laurene continued to play tennis and over time became an avid bowler and golfer; she enjoyed traveling internationally, dancing with her husband, gardening and reading a good book or magazine, but most of all, spending quality time with her friends and family.
She was preceded in death by her father, Carew Stoakes and her mother, Vera Stoakes of Denver.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Richard G. Howser of Robertsdale; sister, Lylith Stoakes Clancy of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sons, Steven Howser of Mobile and Randal Howser of Daphne; stepson, Richard Howser of Wilmette, Ill.; stepdaughter, Cheryl Howser Stack of Sycamore, Ill.; six grandchildren, two nephews and a niece.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 19 at Mack Funeral Home. Graveside funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 20 at the Jubilee Memorial Gardens in Daphne.
