Jeanette Cannon Hudmon, 71, of Opelika, died Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at Bethany House.

She was born Oct. 15, 1936 in Chambers County. She graduated from Valley High School and attended Auburn University in accounting as well as interior design classes.

She was employed with West Point Manufacturing Co. and Ampex Corp. She was co-founder of William H. Hudmon Construction Company in 1958 where she remained employed until 2000. In the early ‘80s, she worked with the investment department buying resort coatal properties. In 2000 she expanded her work to include properties in Tennessee.

Her volunteer work included girls scouts, serving as director in 1968-69; president of the family council with the Lee County Nursing Home; East Alabama Medical Center volunteer; member of the Opelika Historical Society; Senior’s Sunday School teacher at the Orange Beach Baptist Church; fund raising for the Heart Association in Okaloosa County; Investment Club in Baldwin County; and was head fund raiser for the Fire Department in Orange Beach to raise funds for less fortunate children. She consistently devoted most of her volunteer time to the Abused and Battered Center in Baldwin County and the Hospitalized and Paralyzed Veterans of America. She was associated with many civic organizations locally throughout the years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Evie Theo and Joseph E. Cannon; and a daughter, Debora Anita Hudmon.

Survivors include a son, David E. (Tammra) Hudmon; two granddaughters, Haley Marie Hudmon and Ashley LeAnn Hudmon; two brothers, B.R. (Joann) Cannon and Jo (Margaret) O’Neil; a number of nieces and Nephews.

Visitation was held Wednesday, June 4 at Jeffcoat-Trent Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 5 at the funeral home with the Rev. Steve Scoggins officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the Paralyzed Military Veterans Association or Abused and Battered Women’s & Children’s Home of Lee County.
