Husband and wife authors share wisdom and lives

FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Many people go to work and interact with bosses and co-workers, come home and interact with spouses, but this month’s guest speakers for the Pensters writing workshop on Nov. 14 do both — at the same time.

Terry Cline and Judith Richards are a husband and wife writing team; they also work with Cline’s former wife, Linda, on all projects, and they split the money from the books three ways, according to Cline.

Cline and Richards plan to talk to the Pensters about publishing ebooks — their newest venture.

“Of our 20 books, 16 have already been published hardback and paperback,” he stated in an e-mail. “Because they were written on typewriters, they have to be completely typed again to get them on the computer.”

He said they intended to publish four new books as original ebooks, as well.

“Retyping the other books — about two million words — gave us an opportunity to polish the material and make it better. At the rate we’re going, this is a two-year project.”

He said the expansion has been a learning experience for him and Richards, one they want to share with other writers.

“We don’t profess to know everything about it, but we’re learning more every day,” he said. “We’ve had to learn so we could launch our own material. There is no way we can teach everything a writer has to know, but we can explain the broad general knowledge required to start learning.”

But this won’t be the team’s first workshop with the Pensters writing group.

“These two are long-standing friends of The Pensters, and are always generous to share their time and knowledge with us,” Larry Sampson, Pensters member, said.

Cline said they are happy to spend time with the group.

“The Pensters have many fine writers as members. It is always wonderful to meet people who are afflicted with a desire to write, especially when they write so well,” he said. “I can tell you from past experience, any beginning writer needs all the help possible.”

Cline said, “It is not an easy craft, but when you finally get published, it’s the greatest feeling in the world.”

He said they understand what new writers need.

“There is no magic lesson that will get a person published. It comes down to learning by writing,” he said. “The more one writes, the more one learns how to write. All we can do is hold the poor soul’s hand and whisper reassurances — Judy is great at that, and I carry the first-aid kit and tourniquets.”

P.T. Paul, Pensters president, said that Cline and Richards make the perfect pair and make wonderful teachers.

“Judith Richards and Terry Cline are that rarest of combinations: two writers whose marriage is a collaboration and a celebration of the creative life,” Paul added.

The Pensters meet the second Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to noon at the Fairhope Public Library. For more, e-mail Paul at PTPhantazein@gmail.com.
