SUMMERDALE, Ala. — It may be just a 40 acre field of corn now but by next year, it could be well on its way to becoming a field…of dreams for Caleb.

At least that’s what the faculty and students of Alabama Gulf Coast Christian Academy in Summerdale want to happen as they host the first annual “Saturday For the Park” on Saturday, May 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Summerdale Church of Christ located on Hwy. 59.

Complete with inflatables, face painting, carnival games, hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks plus a motorcycle ride, this event hopes to raise $7,500 to build a baseball field in Caleb’s memory.

Killed in a farm machinery accident in July 2009, Caleb Coxwell was a fourth grader at AGCCA and an avid baseball and football player. His dream was to someday play baseball for AGCCA and his parents, Ben nd Bonnie Coxwell along with his grandfather Billy Lambert, pastor of Summerdale Church of Christ, want to make that dream a reality.

A groundbreaking was held last May for the field, located adjacent to AGCCA, and the field has been staked off. With money raised from this event, it is hoped the rest of the field will be able to be completed.

““We have the ground laid out and are hoping to get the backstop, fencing and lights later on in the year. We have had such tremendous support from the community for Caleb’s field and are so excited about getting it finished,” said Ben Coxwell, Caleb’’s dad, who began his third year teaching Science and Bible classes to sixth-12th graders at AGCCA.

Andrea Whittle, one of the event organizers and a teacher at AGCCA, said they plan to have 20 to 25 booths at the event and tickets can be purchased for 25 cents each.

“We have several youth groups from community churches coming to help out and there are lots of community sponsors for the booths as well. We are so grateful for all the support we have received. Everyone has been so good to us,” Whittle said.

With $800 raised so far, Whittle is hoping for a really good turnout and in addition to the booths, there will also be a one hour motorcycle ride throughout the back roads of the community.

“This is the first time we have organized one but we hope it will be a pretty day and an enjoyable ride. Anyone who wants to come out is encouraged to join us,” said Greg Brown, a guitar teacher at AGCCA.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. with a $15 fee for one rider and $7 for each additional rider and the ride should began around 10:30 a.m. The route will begin at County Road 71 and loop around the back roads of County Road 24, 9 and 32 back to the church, Brown said, and a lunch will be provided for those who participate.

Sponsorships are also available for the event including:

-Hall of Famer ($500) Special recognition at the event, name on plaque at ball field, certificate to display in your business, motorcycle ride entrance fee for two riders, recognition on school website

-All Star ($250) recognition at event, name on plaque at ball field, certificate to display in your business, motorcycle ride entrance fee for one rider, recognition on school website.

-Pro Player ($150) Recognition at event, name on plaque at ball field, certificate to display in your business, recognition on school website

-Rookie ($100) Recognition at event, recognition on plaque, certificate to display at business and recognition on school website.

Lester Smith , AGCCA Principal said of Caleb, “He was a very special young man and he loved playing football and baseball and really wanted AGCCA to start a sports program. We are trying our hardest to make that dream a reality for him and his family. Despite his young age, he was a leader and he touched everyone at AGCCA. We greatly miss him.”

AGCCA was established in memory of Allison Coxwell, Caleb’s mom, who died when Caleb was two and according to a webpage dedicated to Caleb’s memory, he was excited to be a part of his mother’s dream. Having a servant’s heart, Caleb was always willing to help and volunteered at every opportunity to lead devotional, pray and lead singing during chapel. He wanted to grow up to be a preacher like his grandfather.”
