Immigration law throws curve at non-resident Baldwin County vehicle owners

BAY MINETTE — The state’s new anti-immigration law may throw a wrench in tag renewals for nearly 50,000 out-of-state citizens who post cars in Baldwin County for use when vacationing or conducting business.

Baldwin Count Probate Judge Tim Russell told commissions Tuesday he was working with state revenue and motor safety officials to adjust the law’s wording which requires presentation of a state driver’s license when renewing.

“We have about 50,000 tags from all over the U.S. and Canada,” Russell said. “We can’t accept their driver’s licenses. We have to ask for a birth certificate, passport or other documents.”

According to state law effective Sept. 1, anyone renewing tags or licenses must show a valid license, Social Security Card or other validation document when renewing. Arguments against the legislation were presented last week in Birmingham before a federal judge, who put the matter on hold until Sept. 29.

Russell told commissioners about 20 percent of Baldwin County residents renew online or via mail. There are 252,000 tags issued in Baldwin County.

“We will get the job done,” Russell said. “I need your support and understanding.”
