Isabel “Sister” DuBose Giddings, born May 2, 1923, a native of Morton, Miss., and a resident of Daphne, Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2010.
She was a folk philosopher and humorist in the tradition of Twain and Bombeck, and a poet in the tradition of Dickinson and The Fireside Poets. She inspired and delighted friends and family with her wit and wisdom, and leaves a legacy of the same in her many journals and diaries. Through her compassion and humor, she always made everyone she met feel special about themselves.
She lived her faith in Christ by demonstrating daily what it means to “love thy neighbor as thyself” (Mathew 22:39b). She was also a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a former member of Broadmoor Baptist Church in Jackson, Miss., and First Baptist Church of Fairhope. In addition, after raising her family, she received her Associate Degree in business from Okaloosa Walton Junior College and her Florida Real Estate License.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney L. Giddings Jr.; and son, James Ronald Giddings.
Survivors include a daughter, Diane Giddings (Dwayne) Beall of Daphne; three sons, Sidney Lenard Giddings III of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Russell Haden Giddings of Memphis, Tenn., Byron Alan (Becky) Giddings of Navarre, Fla.; six grandsons, Sidney Giddings IV of Las Vegas, Haden (Lana) Giddings of Locust Grove, Ga., Chad (Amber) Giddings of Fairhope, Brian (Sarah) Giddings of Brandon, Fla., and Jeffrey (Anna) Beall of Marion; eight great-grandchildren, many beloved nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation begins at 10 a.m. with funeral services at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7 from the chapel of Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home, Fairhope. Graveside services and interment will be held at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10 at Barrancas National Cemetery, NAS, Pensacola, Fla.
