senior snowbirds weekly potluck will run each thursday from Dec. 4 thourgh March 2009. No potlucks will be held Dec. 25 or Jan. 1. Setup time starts at 11 a.m.; serving time starts at 12:30 p.m. All seniors, visitors and locals are welcome. Bring a dish that will serve eight to 10 people. A 50 cent registration fee will be collected at the door to cover incidentals. Drinks and table service will be provided. The weekly meetings will be held in the Gulf Shores Adult Activity Center on Clubhosue Drive. For more information call 981-2493.

We are seeking participants for this winter's Great Books/Great Ideas Discussion Group. The Great Ideas that will be discussed are: Happiness, Power, Love, Political Correctness, Evolution, The Meaning/Purpose of Life, Beauty, Equality, Women's Rights, Suicide, War and Peace and Government. No charge. Readings will be approximately 15 pages each week. Location and start date will depend on the availability and location of participants. The Island Band Foundation is holding its Christmas concert Spaghetti Dinner Dec. 11, 5-6:30 p.m. at the Adult Activity Center. Cost is $5 per plate, $15 per family and includes spaghetti, salad, drink and dessert. Christmas Concert following Spaghetti Dinner at the Erie Meyer Civic Center. The City of Gulf Shores Entertainment Series 2009 presents Troupe America’s professional touring musical version of “A Christmas Carol” Dec. 18 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at the Erie H. Meyer Civic Center Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Preferred seats are $26; Good seats $22. All seats are reserved.
The First Presbyterian Church of Gulf Shores Chancel Choir will present “The Sounds of Christmas”, a traditional Christmas concert on Dec. 18 at 6:30 p.m. This 21st annual performance will feature a wide variety of music including classical works by John Rutter and jazz favorites arranged by Mark Hayes. St Jude’s by the Sea Lutheran Church will hold its 23rd annual Candlelight Service on Dec. 24 at 7 p.m., a communion service on Dec. 25 at 9 a.m. and will welcome in the new year with a worship service on Dec. 31 at 7 p.m. We will also have our Wednesday Advent Services at 7 p.m. to prepare for Christmas. The church is located at 312 E. 16th Ave. in Gulf Shores.

On Dec. 31, Perdido Beach Resort will be welcoming 2009 with its annual New Year’s Eve Gala. Priced at $60 per couple for the event-only, the Grand Ballroom is the site for a gourmet buffet, entertainment by John Brust and the All-Stars and a champagne toast at midnight. For an evening of fine dining, Voyagers restaurant is hosting a five course meal that includes the evening entertainment in the Grand Ballroom for only $150 per couple.
