ROBERTSDALE, Alabama -- Central Christian School will be hosting a Summer Day Camp through Aug. 9, each Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. The price per week is $100 per camper unless there are two or more from the same family, and then a discount kicks in.
“If someone wants to drop their child off just for the day the price is $25,” said Camp Director Lynna Hadley.
Although the camp began May 20, Hadley said the program would be signing up children throughout the summer.
“We’ve broken the camp into three groups,” she said, “which include a preschool group, a kindergarten through second grade group, and one that is for those children who are in grades three through six.”
Teachers are either graduates or current students at the University of Mobile.
“We normally begin each day on the playground, before it gets too hot, and then move inside for a snack before breaking up for our Bible classes,” Hadley said.
Each day has a theme, whether it has to do with learning about different countries, dressing like a bug and then learning about some of the common insects that are found in Central Baldwin, and sports.
“”We have Wet Days built into the calendar, as well as a curriculum for those days that it is raining,” Hadley said, adding that they plan to have a big water slide on those days. “That way the kids always have several activities to participate in.”
In addition to making various arts and crafts, the students are taken swimming, go on field trips to such places at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola’s, Museum of Flight, a trip to Five Rivers, and so forth.
“We have a reading time, as well as time to watch movies,” she said. “We normally conclude each day’s activities with time in the school’s gym to just play and enjoy the time off from regular school,” she said.
During one particular week in June the campers will learn some of the finer points about football, basketball, baseball, soccer, and on the Friday of that week the campers will hold a “Spirit Day,” where they will be able to compete in a variety of Olympic-style competitions.”
“We give each camper a calendar that has each day’s events on it, as well as what will be served for lunch,” Hadley said.
With daycare costing well over $100 a week the Central Christian Summer Day Camp is a bargain for families on a budget.
“We’ve been averaging about 50 campers each day,” she said, “but there’s always room for more.”
