Jabez Mann “Jack” Ponder III died peacefully Friday, Dec. 24, 2010 at home in Montrose, surrounded by friends and family after his long battle with diabetes and the complications which accompany it.

He was born March 1, 1934, the first son of Mr. and Mrs. Jabez Mann Jr. and Mary Ella Nelson Ponder of Point Clear.

He graduated Class of 1952 Fairhope High School, and quickly he became and remained a prominent business man in Baldwin and Mobile County. An aircraft pilot by 20, he bought his own plane shortly after, and he and his family enjoyed adventure, nature and world travels their entire lives. He lavished his family with love.

All who knew him will remember how bold he was, how giving, caring and strong: a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. When he wanted someone or something to succeed, it happened. Despite his often iron-like demeanor, his impish-wit and gently stellar fun spirit kept all around him laughing. Everyone cherished his humor and good cheer. His love for family and fun was clearly visible to all who knew him.

He donated his body to medical research.

Survivors include his loving wife, Margaret Reeder Ponder; his younger brother, Michael Nelson Ponder Sr.; four children, Hilery Ponder Cockrell of Montrose, Reagan “Sandy” Ponder of Honolulu, Patrick Anthony Ponder of Fairhope and Kelley Virginia Ponder of New Orleans; grandchildren, Carson James Cockrell, Bailey Reagan Cockrell, Giovanni Michael Loia, Parker Cunningham Ponder and Mary-Patrick Ponder.

A private memorial service will be observed by friends and family.
