Foley, Ala. - The Foley Police Department named officer Jack Nelson it's 2010 Officer of the Year.

Nelson was presented his award at the department's annual department meeting held recently. Foley Mayor John Koniar and other city leaders were in attendance.

Nelson heads up the DUI Enforcement Unit in Foley. He also serves as the

department's traffic homicide investigator.

"He saves lives by removing many drunk drivers off roadways," Foley Police Chief David Wilson said. "He also has a tough job because he investigates traffic fatalities. He sees both sides of it from the grieving family members and sometimes the carnage at the scene from a  bad wreck."

Communications shift leader Amy Altman was named the police department's 2010 Public Servant Employee of the Year. She is part of the process in connecting calls from residents needing help and the help arriving. She also received the award at the annual department meeting.

"Amy is one of the best dispatchers you can hope for. She always gives 110 percent everyday," Wilson said. "Both employees are very dedicated and professional employees. When they were announced, they received a roar of applause. They are well thought of and well deserving."
