GULF SHORES, Alabama — Spanish Fort’s Jaleel Cousins posted a triple-double as the Toros defeated host Gulf Shores 59-51 in the Coca Cola Christmas Tournament championship game on Wednesday.

Spanish Fort (9-2) went to Cousins early and often, giving the 6-foot-9 center 16 points in the first half. He finished with 21 points, 16 rebounds and 10 blocks.

“Jaleel was really good yesterday and even better today,” Spanish Fort head coach Dru Powell said. “He was very effective on both ends of the floor.”

With four minutes to play in the fourth period, Gulf Shores leading scorer Brandon Silvers fouled out after a called charge, and Gulf Shores coach Clint Wigley was called for a technical foul after arguing the call. Reagen Eubanks made both technical foul free throws, and Danny Rose made two free throws less than a minute later to give the Toros a 46-38 lead. Forty seconds later Rose passed in the lane to Cousins, who dunked the ball to give Spanish Fort a 48-38 lead. Rose finished as Spanish Fort’s second leading scorer with 14 points.

“Danny Rose has been around and paid his dues,” Powell said. “He is our ‘glue guy.’ He can take a charge when the game is in the clutch. He is a really good player and a great kid.”

Free throws from Carter Jones, Brendan McCants and Kawan Atkinson closed out the win for Spanish Fort. The Toros led 13-7 after one period and held a 26-24 lead at the half. They led by one point at 35-34 to start the fourth.

“I thought our guys played hard again, just as they do every time they put the uniform on,” Powell said. “(Gulf Shores) has a great environment down here, and we beat a very good Gulf Shores team today. Coach Wigley does a great job with them. It took everything we had to beat them.”

Silvers led Gulf Shores with 15 points, and Kendall Annan added 11 in the loss.

Gulf Shores advanced to the championship game with wins over Gardendale and Monroe County (Tenn.), while Spanish Fort defeated West Florida and Pensacola.

Spanish Fort will play in the Sandestin Blowout in Destin, Fla. for a tournament starting Dec. 27. Gulf Shores will play in the Saraland High School tournament starting Dec. 28. Spanish Fort will visit Gulf Shores at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 2 for an area matchup.
