BAY MINETTE, Ala. — A capital murder trial begins Monday at Baldwin County Courthouse in Bay Minette for a Lottie man who allegedly used a high-power rifle to kill his mother in law in August 2008, then hitched a ride to a convenience store to call 911 and turn himself in.
James Morgan Dorriety, 37, also is charged with attempted murder, reckless endangerment and two counts of shooting into an occupied vehicle in the incident which took the life of Kathy Lee Allison, 53, of Lottie, according to authorities.
Dorriety was in a vehicle with his wife, April Allison Dorriety, and their child at his father’s residence on Milstead Lane in the Lottie Community when he ordered his wife and child to leave the vehicle.
Dorriety stated that he was going to kill his mother-in-law. When they would not exit, he pulled a .45 caliber pistol and fired several rounds in the wheel well of the vehicle. The wife and child left the vehicle.
Dorriety then got into the vehicle and drove on Seven Mile Road to Dean Lane, authorities said.
As Dorriety approached Dean Lane, the victim and her daughter were traveling in a Ford truck headed south. Dorriety turned his vehicle to block the road. Allison stopped the truck at a distance from Dorriety’s vehicle.
He produced a high-power hunting rifle and fired into the truck, striking Allison. Her daughter was able to escape and run away. Dorriety continued to fire numerous rounds into the truck and the victim, according to sheriff’s reports.
Dorriety walked from the scene where he was given a ride to a convenience store and called 911. Deputies arrived at the store and took Dorriety into custody. Allison was pronounced dead at the scene.
Dorriety confessed to the shooting of his mother-in-law, which he said was the result of an ongoing domestic dispute involving Dorriety, his wife and Allison.
