Jerome Lafayette “Jerry” Byars, 73, succumbed to a long valiant battle with leukemia Friday, Aug. 5, 2011.

He joined loved ones in Heaven while leaving many grieving family members and friends.

Born in Macon, Ga., July 29, 1938, he attended Mercer College and finished his college years graduating fromGeorgia State University.  Most of his career years, Jerry was in public accounting. Before retiring in 2005 and moving toFairhope, he and his wife, Carolyn, lived on St. Simons Island, Ga. for 25 years.

He is survived by his wife Carolyn Klumpp Byars;  his three sons, Jerome Lafayette Byars Jr. and wife, Darlene, Todd Byars and wife, Lisa, Christian Kirby and wife, Anne; two daughters, Cathy Carbone and Stephanie Floyd; one brother, Delmar Byars and wife, June; two sisters, Beverly Harrell and husband, Ken, and Rowena Clements; 11 grandchildren whom he loved so dearly; and a host of nieces, nephews and other loving relatives.

He will be so greatly missed by his family, many loving friends and members of Fairhope United Methodist Church. He was attended by wonderful caring doctors; David Clarkson and William Bingham at Thomas Hospital and many awesome nurses. He was also well attended at Emory Hospital, Atlanta, Ga. by Dr. Jean Khoury.

A visitation will be held Monday, Aug. 8, 2011, from 5-7 p.m., at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home in Fairhope. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Aug.9, 2011, 11 a.m. at Fairhope United Methodist Church. Mr. Byars will lie-in-state at the church one hour prior to the service.

A private interment will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fairhope United Methodist Church Caring Ministries.
