Jingle Bell Run will have post-race event for Daphne residents on Dec. 4 at City Hall

DAPHNE, Ala. — The Daphne City Council decided to approve requests by the Arthritis Foundation to hold the 5-K Jingle Bell Run/Walk post-race party on city property.

The council voted unanimously to have the post-race festivities on the front lawn of City Hall, along with alcoholic beverages, breakfast for race participants, inflatables for kids and a disc jockey providing music. The race will begin at 8 a.m. Dec. 4.

The Mobile-based Arthritis Foundation serves Mobile County and Baldwin County, and foundation representative Kellie Myers presented the event to the city after Baldwin County residents requested more events in the county from the foundation.

Councilman Ron Scott said that because of the tough economic times and with the city trying to cut back on expenses, the donations to non-profit organizations might be a little less than year’s past, if there will be any donations at all.

“I think we need to find as many opportunities like this to help as many worthwhile causes as we can,” he said.

The issue of insurance to cover serving alcoholic beverages was brought up by City Clerk David Cohen, but Myers said the arthritis foundation has the insurance-aspect taken care of.

The council meeting will take place 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 29 in City Hall.
