Virgie E. Johnson, a native of Nebraska and long time resident of Foley, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010.
She had a personal relationship with Jesus and was a faithful member of Foley United Methodist Church. She was active in many areas of service including Sunday School teacher, Youth Leader, Chairman of the Church Council/Administrative Board, served on the Board of Trustees, and the Joy Center Board of Trustees.
She attended Wayne State Teachers College in Nebraska and taught school. She retired as a Civilian employee with the Department of the Navy after 36 years. She was given the Meritorious Civilian Service Award, the second highest award and medal provided to civilian employees with in agencies of the federal government of the United States. She was a member of the Foley City Planning Commission for 28 years and was Chairman several years.
She was a member of the National Business & Professional Women’s organization, served as President of the Alabama Federation, and was Parliamentarian for 18 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Edward Johnson.
Survivors include a son and two daughters, Randy (Mary Jo) Johnson, Ann Morris and Janie (Ron) MacBeth; eight grandchildren, Brenda Rossi, Doug Johnson, Tracy Cockcroft, Emilea Snyder, Jason Oulliber, Jodell Harrah, Jolene Oulliber and Jaralea Garrett; 11 great-grandchhildren to whom she was lovingly known as “Granny Great;” and a twin brother, Virgil Kilmer of College Place, Wash.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27 at Pine Rest Funeral home in Foley. A private family graveside service will be followed by a Celebration of Life at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28 at the Foley United Methodist Church.
