BAY MINETTE, Ala. — The first-degree rape trial of former Spanish Fort High School football player Deon “D.J.” Johnson ended Wednesday after the defendant was granted youthful offender status in the case.
Johnson, 20, was given youthful offender status after the prosecution and defense reached a deal, the details of which were not released to the public on Wednesday. Details of Johnson’s punishment were also not released.
Johnson had been accused in the sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl between November and December 2011 in the parking lot at Bay Community Church in Daphne.
A person can be given youthful offender status if they are charged with a crime that happened when he or she is under the age of 21. Youthful offender status keeps that crime off the person’s record and it greatly restricts the release of information to the public.
Johnson previously had two other sexual assault cases filed against him, all of which have now been resolved. He was acquitted in March of a first-degree rape charge after he was accused of raping a 15-year-old girl in a bathroom at Spirit Park in Spanish Fort.
He was also granted youthful offender status in 2013 in a separate second-degree rape and sodomy charge.
